Transportation Engineering and Monitoring

Improving safety of special transports
Risk-based transport design will provide better guidelines
and criteria for the transportation of special deck
cargoes as well as floating objects. To ensure better
implementation of these guidelines and criteria, an on
board tool will be developed to simulate the consequences
of actions such as route changes and the effects
of speed reductions and course changes under
harsh conditions. Use of this tool as decision support
system will increase the safety of transports. The system
will also be able to monitor what actually happens
during the voyage.

Improving safety of towage special transportation
Office system
The office system is a suite of computer programs under
a graphical user interface, which computes the design
values for a transport and evaluates the risks. The
transport will be modelled using a Monte Carlo type
simulation process, which will also allow the system to
be used for training purposes. In addition, it will also
calculate the full motion climate for the long-term statistics
and related probability of failure of e.g. sea fastenings.
The main components of the office system are:
• FDB (Forecast DataBase)
• RP&D (Route Planning and Display)
• VMC ( Voyage Motion Climate)
• CDM (Captain’s Decision Mimic)
• MCS (Monte Carlo Simulator)
On-board system
The on-board system is a decision support and monitoring
package designed to support the crew by providing
information for operational and routing decisions.
The main components of the on-board system are:
• STMU (Short-term Meteo Update)
• RP&D (Route Planning and Display)
• M&L (Monitoring and Logging)
• DRS (Decision and Routing Support)
